Fifteen Years Ago in Squash Magazine February 2001
Michelle Quibell adorned the cover for winning the U.S. Junior Open GU19 title and for beating Kasey Brown in the finals of the British Junior Open GU17. At Yale, Quibell clinched two national individual intercollegiate titles and led the Eli to three national team titles. After graduating in 2006, she played for Team USA in the 2007 Pan American Games, earning a silver medal in the team event. Quibell worked for the National Resources Defense Council in Washington and got two masters degrees at Michigan. She now works for Accenture in Seattle and is a US Squash board member.

Colin McQuillan, the now-retired English squash journalist, reported from Hong Kong on the 2005 World Open. It was where the twenty-two year-old Nicol David captured what would be the first of her eight world titles and where the Malaysian clinched the world No.1 ranking for the first time, something she would hold for 112 months. “This is only the beginning,” David told McQuillan. “I’m looking forward to the future.” Indeed.

Has it only been five years since Ramy Ashour snagged the second of his three JP Morgan Tournament of Champions titles? Since then, the good, the bad and the sad for the Egyptian wunderkind: he reached the final of every tournament he entered in 2012 and pulled off his magnificent unbeaten run of forty-nine matches in a row. And then injuries: knees, Achilles and especially his hamstring—all of which have led to numerous withdrawals, mid-match retirements and doubts about whether the twenty-eight year-old will ever have another sustained run of excellence.
