World Squash Day is flying the flag for the 2020 Olympic bid with astonishing results.
More than 12,000 players worldwide have signed up to play in the biggest squash match in history, the 2020 Team Challenge, which takes place on Saturday October 20th.
Clubs are invited to join two squads, Team Squash and Team 2020, to play 20-a-side matches with each individual rubber being one game up to 20 points.
Every club result counts towards an over global score.
Leading stars James Willstrop, Nick Matthew, Ramy Ashour and women’s world champion Nicol David were busy using the social networking sites to promote squash’s Olympic aspirations during the London Games.
Willstrop wrote a Squash Player’s Olympic Diary in the Huffington Post and David tried out a different Olympic discipline every day, releasing pictures to her 25,000 followers on Twitter.
World Squash Day founder Alan Thatcher said: “The response from players worldwide has been phenomenal, with new clubs signing up every day. Having reached 10,000 players, there has been a big surge of interest and we have added another 2,000 in a matter of days. I hope we can maintain that momentum and produce a fantastic glob- al event that illustrates the global support that exists for the bid. I hope World Squash Day will be so big that the IOC simply cannot ignore it.”
